Oxford University and Ellison Institute of Technology Forge Strategic Alliance to Tackle Global Challenges

Last Updated: 12 Dec, 2024

The University of Oxford has formed a strategic alliance with the Ellison Institute of Technology, supported by a £130 million investment, to advance research in health, agriculture, climate change, and AI.

Oxford University has entered into a strategic alliance with the US-based Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT). The partnership is underpinned by a £130 million investment from EIT, and aims to accelerate innovation in four key areas:

  • Health and Medical Science
  • Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture
  • Climate Change and Clean Energy
  • Government Innovation in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

EIT's New Oxford Campus:

To support this ambitious partnership, EIT is establishing a new campus at Oxford Science Park. The campus, expected to fully open in 2027, will be a hub for cutting-edge research and collaboration. It will feature:

  • 30,000 sq m of research laboratories
  • Supercomputing facilities
  • An oncology and preventative care clinic
  • Educational and meeting spaces

The construction of the campus is estimated to cost over £1 billion.

Impact and Vision:

Key individuals involved in the partnership have highlighted its potential to address global challenges and transform research and innovation:

Larry Ellison, Chairman of Oracle Corporation and Chief Technology Officer of EIT, emphasised the partnership's mission to translate scientific and technological advancements into solutions for humanity's most pressing problems.

Professor Sir John Bell, President of EIT Oxford, highlighted the synergy between world-class research, sustained investment, and state-of-the-art facilities that will drive progress.

Professor Irene Tracey, Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University, acknowledged the unique opportunity presented by the partnership to tackle humanity's challenges and empower future leaders.

Existing Collaboration: The Ellison Scholars Programme

The strategic alliance builds upon the existing Ellison Scholars programme, launched by EIT in the previous year. This programme annually awards full scholarships to 20 undergraduate and postgraduate students globally, enabling them to study at Oxford University.

Clarification Regarding the Eagle and Child Pub

It is important to note that EIT's ownership of the Eagle and Child pub in St Giles is unrelated to the alliance with Oxford University.

This major partnership has underscored Oxford University’s commitment to world-leading research and more broadly the UK's position as a global leader in education and innovation.
