Zahraa Y

Oxford University
Congratulations, Zahraa! After excelling at her state secondary school and successfully navigating the challenges of A levels, Zahraa is now heading to the University of Oxford to study History. Read on to discover how tutoring and perseverance helped her achieve her dream.

With the support of tutoring, Zahraa was able to excel in her A levels, build confidence in essay writing, and prepare for the Oxford admissions process. She is now off to study History at the prestigious University of Oxford.

Can you tell us a bit about your school background and initial challenges?

I went to a state secondary school for my GCSEs. One of the main challenges was finding support to achieve top grades and reach my dream of going to Oxford. The Tuition Center was really helpful, especially during GCSEs, providing booster sessions aimed at top grades. That support continued through my A levels, particularly with applying to Oxford in ways my school couldn’t offer.

How did you find the transition from GCSEs to A levels?

The jump was huge. I started A levels with maths, English literature, history, and politics. The initial transition was difficult—essay styles were very different, and maths was much harder compared to GCSEs. I reached out for maths tuition, which improved my grades, though I eventually dropped maths because I preferred my other three subjects.

How did tutoring help with your essay-based subjects?

Tutoring was really helpful for English, history, and politics. When I struggled with essay techniques, I could go through them step by step in a focused way, which I couldn’t get at school. It helped me develop skills to structure and refine my essays.

Why did you choose your A level subjects?

I enjoyed and excelled in humanities at GCSE, especially history and English literature, so I continued them. Politics intrigued me too, even though I hadn’t studied it at GCSE. I’ve always been interested in global politics, so studying it at A level was really enjoyable.

What were the biggest challenges when starting A levels?

Time management was a big challenge. I had to complete high-quality essays under pressure. Tutors helped me learn how to be concise, ensuring I could express everything I wanted within the time available.

Why did you choose to pursue history at university?

I really enjoyed history at A level and wanted to go deeper. Wider reading showed me how interested I was in topics beyond the A level curriculum. Oxford’s history program offers such a vast range of optional papers and high-standard teaching that it felt like the perfect place to explore my interests and thrive academically.

How did tutoring help with Oxford-specific preparation?

I had to take the History Admissions Test, which was daunting. School prep started very late, but my tutor began focusing on it at the end of year 12. This early preparation gave me the skills and confidence to approach the test calmly.

What about interview preparation?

My tutor started me on interview prep before school teachers did. I received personalized feedback, mock interviews, and guidance on structure and question types. This helped me feel prepared and confident, particularly for the online format of Oxford interviews.

What was the main challenge in the admissions process?

It was all very new. The admissions test and interviews required a different set of skills from A levels. A levels focus on what you know, but Oxford looks at your potential and independent thinking. My tutor guided me through this, mapping out the process step by step—from the admissions test to essays to interviews.

How did online tutoring sessions help?

Online sessions were very effective, especially for interview practice. They mimicked the actual online interview environment, helping me feel comfortable expressing myself and applying techniques to an online setting.

What did you enjoy most about tutoring in general?

Sessions were self-directed. Tutors prioritized what I wanted to focus on each time. I could email concerns beforehand, and sessions were tailored to my needs. At the end of each session, tutors asked what I wanted to tackle next, which made learning independent and targeted.

What advice would you give other students aiming for top universities?

Don’t doubt yourself. I had doubts throughout the process, thinking I might not deserve Oxford. But once I committed seriously to my grades and the admissions process, I realized my hard work qualified me. If Oxford is your dream, trust yourself and put in the effort—you might surprise yourself with what you can achieve.

What are you most looking forward to at university?

I’m excited to explore areas of history I’m most interested in, like intellectual and international history. I want to study periods such as the early Islamic era and the interaction of different intellectual movements. Being surrounded by people equally passionate about history, and learning from expert professors, is something I’m really looking forward to.
